Scroll down for pictures of the walk in 2009, 2007 and 2006

Start (10.00) by the Walkway plaque in traflager Square (It's 40 paces straight ahead from the foot of the National Gallery Portico steps (map in due course)
We plan to walk the same section of the walkway which we did in 2006 (shown in red on the map below. (More detailed itineray to be posted nearer the time)

The Silver Jubilee Walkway, as it was known then, was originally laid down in 1977 as the main feature of the work of the Environmental Committee, set up by the London Celebrations for The Queen's Silver Jubilee, under the Chairmanship of Max Nicholson. Her Majesty The Queen opened it by unveiling a plaque on the South Bank Lion, on the night of the Thames fireworks celebrations on 9 June 1977.

On 12 July 2006, a number of people who knew Max commemorated his involvement with the Jubilee Walkway by walking the Northern Loop of the walkway on what would have been his 102nd birthday. On 12 July 2007 a slightly larger number of people walked a further section between Russell Suare and Tate Modern. On 12 July 2008, we walked from St Pauls, along the South Bank past City Hall, across Tower Bridge, and through the Barbican to return to St. Pauls. In 2009, we will walk the last section from St Pauls, along the South Bank to Lambeth Bridge, and then back to Leicester Square. The route for 2010 will be similar to the 2006 route.

The planned route is shown below, with some pictures of the previous walks. The Jubilee Walkway website has a detailed map and descriptions of the route.

Please come prepared for the weather and note that the Trust can not accept any liability for your safety and security as part of this activity.

Sunday 12th July 2009 - walk from St Pauls via the South Bank to Lambeth Bridge and then via Parliament Square to Trafalgar Square

Early arrivals were given a brief explanation of how the Tylers and Bricklayers sundial works by its designer (and leader of this walk) Piers Nicholson

The walk started over the Millennium footbridge

with magnificant views of the City downstream

..... and sandcastles on the beach

Strange sights along the route

We were glad some children could join in the Walk

and very surprised at this

Lambeth Palace with the tower of St. Mary's Lambeth

The Houses of Parliament from Lambeth Bridge

This little (and little-known) gem of Victorian architecture in Victora Gardens

The burghers of Calais

There were a large nuber of charity runs aking it difficult to cross roads - and large groups of exhausted runners as we got closer to Trafalgar Square

Entrance to the War Rooms museum

Facade of the Foreign Office

Rural calm in St. James Park

with the Horse Guards opposite

Where have they all got to?

Adults then had a nice lunch at the Stockpot in Panton Street while children and perents had a picnic in St. James Park
Grateful thanks to Frances Follin and Alan Butler of Genesys Consultants for these pictures of a most enjoyable walk
